DNMS Therapist Certification
The DNMS can take time and patience to master. Licensed therapists who invest the time to learn the process well, can have their DNMS skills formally acknowledged by becoming certified. There are several steps to DNMS Certification. They include:
You can pace the process to meet your needs – whether fast, medium, or slow.
READ THE DNMS BOOK & COMPLETE THE HOME STUDY COURSE
The 2009 book contains a written description of just about everything a DNMS therapist will need to know to execute the DNMS and work through all the usual blocks that arise. The Home Study Course covers the same material but in a narrated, animated slide show. It also provides recordings of live DNMS sessions and a Study Guide with study questions. Reading the book and completing the Course are the first steps to becoming certified. For information about the DNMS book, click here. For information about the Home Study Course, click here. FIDELITY TO THE PROTOCOLS
The DNMS has evolved over the years. Some protocol features that were embraced a few years ago have since been discarded or replaced. Many DNMS therapists are still using outdated protocol elements. Some therapists just follow the gist of DNMS protocols. Others are mixing it with other modalities. While there are certainly many effective ways to get good clinical outcomes, to become a Certified DNMS Therapist candidates will need to demonstrate sufficient fidelity to the protocols as they are specifically described in the 2009 DNMS book.
EVALUATION BY CHECKLISTS
A series of protocol checklists have been designed to assist the certification candidates in a self-evaluation of tape recordings of their DNMS practice, and in a DNMS consultant's objective evaluation of a candidate's recordings. Each checklist is comprised of little increments of a DNMS protocol so candidates and their consultants can easily narrow in on specific protocol elements that were done well or need improvement. Click here for the web page with a list of all the Protocol Checklists.
THE CONSULTATION
The consultation will involve discussion of problems that arise in DNMS sessions, with and without a review of session tapes. The DNMS Consultant will (a) help the candidate understand the underlying protocol principles, (b) guide him/her to execute the protocol steps skillfully, and (c) ultimately assess the level of DNMS knowledge and skills. A candidate may need just a little consultation, or a lot of consultation, before fidelity to the protocols is demonstrated. The consultation can take place on the phone, over internet conferencing, or in person.
AREAS OF COMPETENCE
To become certified, candidates will need to demonstrate competence on tape with at least one example of each of the following:
- Resource Development Protocol
- Switching the Dominance Protocol on a current problem
- Beginning to Target a current problem
- Administration of a Rung of the Attachment Needs Ladder
- The Conference Room Protocol
- The Needs Meeting Protocol
- Overcoming Processing Blocks
Once a candidate submits a tape that demonstrates mastery of a protocol, the Consultant will check it off the list of requirements. Once all items the above items are checked off the list, the Consultant will write a letter of recommendation, and refer the candidate for the final exam.
THE FINAL EXAM
The final exam will be comprehensive. There will be multiple choice and true/false questions to test general knowledge. There will also be essay questions about case scenarios to test clinical judgment. The exam questions will come from the 2009 DNMS book. There will be a small fee to cover the cost of grading the essay questions in the exam.
KEEPING YOUR CERTIFICATION CURRENT
At some point we will initiate a Certification renewal program. It will involve one or more tasks that demonstrate your ongoing use of and/or competence with the DNMS protocols. While the details are not worked out yet, we can promise the renewal program will be flexible and affordable; and you should be able to keep current without having to travel.
