Have you ever struggled to prepare very wounded clients for EMDR? Have you ever been surprised when EMDR didn’t help, or actually made symptoms worse? If so, this webinar is for you. Our most dysregulated, dissociative clients have wounded parts of self that are stuck in the past. Because these wounded parts are easily triggered, they keep clients in a perpetual state of overwhelm — putting safe and effective EMDR out of reach. This webinar will lay out a systematic way to prepare clients for EMDR — a detailed road map for improving emotion regulation.
It will start by illuminating important differences between foundational stability and foundational instability. It will distinguish trauma wounds from attachment wounds and explain why that distinction matters. It will cover ego state therapy interventions from Shirley Jean Schmidt’s Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy that are highly effective at stabilizing dissociated parts of self. This webinar will show how to…
- take a childhood attachment history
- quickly and effectively mobilize a team of vetted Resources
- establish a Special Safe Place (a fun place for wounded parts to hang out)
- identify therapy goals that can actually block processing
- set an effective therapy goal – free of blocks
- invite wounded parts forward
- start a dialogue with wounded parts
- encourage wounded parts to tell their story
- attune, validate, and empathize with wounded parts
- build rapport with especially belligerent and oppositional parts
- give wounded parts missing information, and clear any misunderstandings
- connect wounded parts to a loving, supportive team of Resources
- orient wounded parts to present time
- enable wounded parts to see reality more clearly
- show wounded parts they’re overreacting to harmless recordings
Collectively these interventions can stabilize dysregulated, dissociated, wounded parts. As more and more parts are stabilized, clients gets triggered less often. When triggered, there is lower intensity and faster recovery. This improvement in emotion regulation can prepare clients for safe and effective EMDR trauma processing. Upon completing the training, attendees should be able to apply these interventions with clients. Attendees will get a 39-page handout that includes a condensed version of the material covered in the presentation, worksheets for all the protocols and interventions, and three pages of answers to frequently asked questions. Handout will not include the webinar slides.
Target Audience
This workshop will be helpful for all mental health professionals who work with clients wounded in childhood (psychologists, counselors, social workers, and LMFTs, etc.)–whether trained in EMDR or not. While this is NOT an EMDR training per se, EMDR therapists will learn how to use these interventions to prepare fragile, wounded, dissociative clients for EMDR. This is officially an Intermediate Level training. But it will teach stabilizing ego state therapy interventions informative to all skill levels.

and “The Structured Clinical Interview
for Dissociative Disorders (SCID-D)”
“This training is an excellent resource for EMDR therapists working with clients who have experienced trauma and attachment wounds. This training is filled with practical techniques grounded in ego state theory for working compassionately with clients. Whether you are a mental health trainee or a more experienced EMDR professional, I would recommend this training.”
“I have been searching for years to find the best way to help prepare my clients for EMDR processing. After utilizing the information in this training, I no longer need to search. The information is practical and user friendly, and I was able to integrate the techniques immediately with incredible results. The information is especially helpful for clients who have early attachment trauma, where they have an underdeveloped AIP system, thus stalling EMDR processing. It was amazing watching clients calm and settle back into themselves–I watched their AIP grow right in front of me. I can’t express how truly amazingly this training has affected my practice.”
“After taking this training, I feel fully prepared to use EMDR with adult clients who suffer from childhood trauma. I learned simple interventions to stabilize wounded child parts before beginning EMDR, to reduce overwhelm, flooding, and negative abreactions. I immediately began using them with positive results for the clients, and a boost of confidence in my own abilities to fully prepare them before processing. I can highly recommend this workshop!”
“I can unequivocally recommend this training! It’s one of the best I’ve taken in many years. I could immediately apply what I learned with my clients. If you need help with highly reactive clients who are not ready for EMDR reprocessing, you’ll want to take this training.”
“I highly recommend this training, particularly as it teaches skills and strategies to stabilize clients so that they will be safely available for EMDR trauma processing. Since taking this training, I feel much more confident in working with clients with attachment issues and feel I have tools to address their needs.”
“This training immediately enhanced my work with my wounded and traumatized clients. I was much more confident, at the ready with new and easy to implement interventions, and unshaken by processing blocks that would have totally stumped me in the past. As a result, my clients experience more immediate and profound relief.”
