16-Hour On-Demand Webinar

A DNMS Masterclass in Treating Complex Trauma

How to Prepare Dissociative,
Attachment-Wounded
Clients for EMDR

16 CEs & 16 EMDRIA Credits

Our most dysregulated, dissociative, attachment-wounded clients have wounded child parts that are stuck in the past. Because these child parts are easily triggered, they keep clients in a perpetual state of overwhelm—putting safe and effective EMDR out of reach. Therapists need a particular set of skills to be successful with these challenging clients. This webinar gently guides you to develop that skill set! It lays out a comprehensive, systematic roadmap for helping wounded child parts heal their attachment wounds in the preparation phase of EMDR. As more and more child parts heal, these clients become better able to regulate their emotions—eventually well enough for the EMDR trauma processing phase to be safe and effective.

The webinar starts by illuminating the important difference between foundational stability and foundational instability. It distinguishes trauma wounds from attachment wounds and explains why that distinction matters. It covers DNMS ego state therapy interventions that are highly effective at stabilizing dissociated child parts. This webinar shows you how to…

  • take an attachment history
  • quickly and effectively mobilize a team of vetted Resources
  • establish a Special Safe Place (a fun place for wounded parts to hang out)
  • identify therapy goals that can actually block processing
  • set effective therapy goals – free of blocks
  • invite wounded parts forward
  • start a dialogue with wounded parts
  • connect wounded parts to a loving, supportive team of Resources
  • encourage wounded parts to tell their story
  • attune, validate, and empathize with wounded parts
  • orient wounded parts to present time
  • help wounded parts understand how and why they get triggered
  • enable wounded parts to see reality more clearly
  • give wounded parts missing information
  • build rapport with especially oppositional parts
  • overcome processing blocks
  • attune to clients and their wounded parts

Collectively these interventions can stabilize dysregulated, dissociative, attachment-wounded child parts. As more and more child parts are stabilized, clients get triggered less often. When they do get triggered, the intensity is less, and recovery is faster. This improvement in emotion regulation can prepare clients for safe and effective EMDR trauma processing. This webinar aims to give you the skills and confidence you need to be successful with your most challenging clients. Click here to see how the DNMS compares to similar models.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I subscribe to the webinar, how long will I have access to it?

There’s no time limit. Access it as long as you have an internet connection.

How is this webinar different from DNMS on-demand webinars I already have?

This webinar is similar to our (now retired) 10-hour on-demand webinar: Ego State Therapy Interventions to Prepare Your Most Wounded, Dysregulated, and Dissociative Clients for EMDR. This new one is better at explaining concepts. Modules that cover background material, taking a history, stabilizing wounded parts, and overcoming processing blocks go into more detail. Click here to see what’s covered. There are many more videos of real client sessions. The handout contains every word in the webinar, plus answers to 50+ Frequently Asked Questions. In addition, a trove of worksheets, checklists, and a questionnaire come with the webinar. If you’re a current subscriber of a DNMS on-demand webinar, you can apply whatever you paid for the webinar you have towards a subscription for this new one. Contact us for details. dnms@dnmsinstitute.com.

How is this on-demand webinar different from the live DNMS webinar I took?

That would depend on which live webinar you took. If you recently took a 4-day webinar with Lynn James, Amy Blake, or Karen Gardner, this new on-demand webinar is very similar. But, it explains some concepts more clearly, and the sections that cover background material, taking a history, stabilizing wounded parts, and overcoming processing blocks, go into more detail.

How does the DNMS compare to Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

For a complete listing of the many fundamental differences, click here.

Is the DNMS different from other ego state/attachment EMDR treatments?

There are about a dozen similar models, like the Progressive Approach, Attachment-Informed EMDR, and Attachment-Focused EMDR. While the DNMS has areas of overlap with many of these approaches, there are fundamental differences. For a list of those differences, click here.

Can I take this webinar if I’m not trained in EMDR?

Yes, but there is a version of this webinar for non-EMDR therapists.Click here to read all about it. These two webinars are almost identical.

Lynn James, LCPC
EMDRIA-Approved Consultant
and EMDR Trainer

“The DNMS is the most thorough, effective, compassionate therapy I’ve encountered in my 30+ years as a trauma specialist. This webinar is not only clinically excellent, it’s also a work of art. Beautiful illustrations enhance the teaching. The metaphors and scripts are immediately useful and highly effective. Many EMDR clinicians I consult with feel lost when wounded parts block processing or experience destabilizing triggers. This webinar provides an effective roadmap for navigating these challenges. I highly recommend it.”

Jill Hosey, LICSW
EMDRIA-Approved Consultant
and EMDR Trainer

“Thank you so much Shirley Jean for your incredible work creating the DNMS. I love that it offers a myriad of tools and ideas to support the stabilization of clients with histories of emotional deprivation, neglect, and trauma. The combination of lecture, video demos, and role plays helps clinicians synthesize the theory and content. The accompanying scripts and metaphors helps operationalize the theory and content into practice. I strongly recommend the integration of DNMS into any EMDR therapist’s toolbox!”

Alicia Beltran, LCPC, LPC
Certified EMDR Therapist

“I’m an experienced EMDR therapist. I believe this DNMS webinar should be an essential training for all EMDR therapists. All EMDR therapists will encounter wounded parts within their client’s system as Shirley Jean describes in the webinar. This training has not only improved my ability to stabilize wounded parts before trauma reprocessing, but trauma reprocessing has become more manageable too. I highly recommend this training for all EMDR therapists.”

Laura Ott, LCSW, PMH-C
Certified EMDR Therapist

“This webinar is a MASTERCLASS in treating attachment wounds with ego state therapy. It’s give me a newfound confidence to help clients have the most transformative EMDR healing experience.”

Luna Medina-Wolf, LMHC
EMDRIA-Approved Consultant

“I am an EMDR facilitator who’s been doing ego state work for years. The value of this ego state therapy when working with complex cases is immense. I strongly recommend this webinar.”

Lisa Prefontaine, LMHC
EMDRIA-Approved Consultant
and EMDR Trainer

“As an experienced EMDR clinician I’ve seen an increasing need for ego state stabilization interventions to prepare clients for trauma processing. This DNMS webinar thoughtfully and thoroughly provides interventions to do that, with lots of examples from real client videos. Shirley Jean excels at modeling these stabilization interventions with ease and expertise–proving that healing attachment wounds is possible even before trauma processing begins.”

Ryan Gorman, RN, PMHNP
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

“I’ve been using the DNMS and EMDR for over 10 years. Still, I found the webinar content to be invaluable. Interventions contained in each module are elegant in their precision, which is notable in light of the subject complexity. As a result of the webinar I’m now better able to respond to confusing or unpredictable aspects of ego-state work. Using the provided scripts significantly improved my effectiveness. This webinar is an essential resource for any provider working with clients motivated to heal from childhood attachment wounds.”

Danielle Jenkins, LCSW-S
Certified EMDR Therapist

“Although I have an intermediate level of experience, I often find myself stuck when complex clients show up with different wounding parts blocking our ability to do EMDR. This webinar taught me how to work with clients with avoidant parts of self and parts who struggle to look at painful memories. I love how user friendly the webinar is and the freedom to complete it at my own pace. I encourage anyone who wants a better understanding of parts of self to take this training.”

Naomi Rook, MA, LPC

“I am a newly licensed therapist. The webinar helped me better understand the complexities of working with wounded parts. It’s increased my confidence and I’m already noticing breakthroughs with some severely wounded clients. The webinar includes a lot of realistic scenarios and video demonstrations that are especially helpful! I can recommend this webinar to anyone interested in helping their adult clients heal from childhood attachment wounds.”
